Written in Italian in the 14th century, The Divine Comedy reached a very wide audience for whom reading the Bible, published in Latin, was not as accessible.
This poem describes an allegorical and striking vision of Hell (in the Christian sense) and the punishments endured there.
In the first canto, which gives its name to the game, Dante traverses the nine circles of Hell: Limbo, the Lustful, the Gluttonous, the Avaricious and Prodigal, the Wrathful, the Heretics, the Violent, the Fraudulent, and finally the Treacherous.
